Roman Brady
As Shawn and Caroline's eldest son, Roman Brady was a police detective when he first met Dr. Marlena Evans in 1982. She had been receiving threatening phone calls and, with the Salem Strangler on the loose, Brady was assigned to protect the doc. They fell in love and would have married except that Roman's estranged wife, Anna, and their daughter, Carrie, returned to Salem. Once the divorce was finalized, Roman was free to wed. By that time he had become the object of crime boss Stefano DiMera's wrath and several assassination attempts were made on Roman's wedding day. He survived and Roman and Marlena had twins, Samantha and Eric, before Stefano seemed to shoot Roman in 1984.
Though presumed dead, Roman was actually held captive for several years. In 1986, Marlena met an amnesiac stranger and was led to believe that this man was Roman, who had undergone brain washing, torture and cosmetic surgery.

The real Roman returned to Salem in 1991 and found his wife with another "Roman." Eventually he set the record straight. Roman II was then called John Black and went from Marlena's bed as her husband, to a close friend of the family and buddy to Roman.
However, Marlena and John always had deep feelings for each other and after a one-time tryst, Marlena became pregnant. When the baby turned out to be fathered by John, Roman divorced Marlena and left town in 1994 to take on a secret crime-fighting mission.
As a result of Sami's accident and subsequent amnesia, the search began for her father, Roman. When news came that Roman was dead, John and Marlena became closer, but neither revealed their feelings.

On John and Marlena's wedding day, Kristen delivered a bandaged and wheelchair-bound Roman, suffering from the still-lethal effects of chemical warfare. John agreed to release an imprisoned Stefano and join him on a jungle quest to find Roman's cure. As his last wish Roman wants to re-wed Marlena. Drawn to Roman in his need and believing John was dead in the jungle, Marlena agreed to remarry Roman. They were before a priest and about to make their vows when John arrived carrying Roman's cure. Roman was rushed back to the hospital for treatment.
Thanks to Kristen, Roman found out that John and Marlena were still together. It strengthened his determination to win back Marlena. Later, Roman gave up and accepted that Marlena and John belonged together.
When Marlena believed that Brady was responsible for Belle's coma, Roman agreed to go after the young man, who had decided to skip town. He and Abe trailed Brady to a truck-stop and when he tried to escape, Abe shot him in the back. Brady survived the shooting, but sued, demanding that Roman be stripped of his job and benefits in addition to paying one million dollars in damages! At the end of the arbitration, Brady was awarded one hundred thousand dollars and both Abe and Roman were allowed to keep their jobs.

Roman has continued to grow closer to Kate Roberts, as he tries to figure out what her relationship to Stefano DiMera is, or was. But, while he investigates Kate, he has also become attracted to her, much to his daughter Sami's dismay. He played a major part in helping his brother Bo to deal with Hope's kidnapping. In a big step, he helped his former nemesis Brady Black to find Chloe Lane's biological father, who is in the witness protection program.
Roman and Kate's relationship finally got going, although she was initially reluctant. She finally fell for him, but he couldn't tell her he loved her. Plus, she was living with the knowledge of her hidden past. This played a part in her becoming a suspect in Abe's murder. She had argued with Abe the morning of his murder after he threatened to expose her past as a hooker for Stefano. Ultimately, she told Roman the truth and they were able to get beyond this. He finally asked her to marry him. Roman and Kate planned a gala New Year's Eve wedding at Tuscany. Sami tried desperately to stop it; fortunately, she was not succcessful. After he and Kate exchanged vows, Roman asked Kate to try to find a way to get along with Sami. This ended up being his last request to his new wife as he was killed minutes later. Of course, Roman wasn't really dead. He was on Tropical Island Salem with the other "victims" of Salem's most notorious serial killer. They had to live with the knowledge that they are really alive and their families and friends are back in real Salem, grieving their deaths. While on the island, Roman and Marlena grew closer, though without rekindling the love they once shared. Eventually, the truth started to come out; Jennifer believed Jack was still alive and headed toward the island. It wasn't long before other Salemites followed and discovered their "dead" loved ones. The next challenge was escaping. Tony tried everything in his power to stop them, including causing a volcanic eruption. They were determined to get off that island, though, and they almost all succeeded. Unfortunately, that volcanic eruption caused a huge wave and capsized the Salemites' rafts and boats. The Coast Guard picked most of them up, but a few of them, including Roman, were recaptured by Tony. He eventually took them to a remote European castle where Roman and Marlena were imprisoned together. While in the castle, Tony tormented Roman and Marlena with video footage that appeared to show Kate and John making love. Eventually, Roman and Marlena gave up hope of ever escaping and gave into the temptation and made love themselves. They weren't sure if anyone else was in the castle until Jack popped through their wall. With his help, they finally escaped this DiMera prison. They fought fire and explosions, but finally made it out. They made their way back to Salem, but they weren't happy with what was waiting for them there. John and Kate became engaged in their absence and Roman convinced Marlena to keep the truth (that they had made love) from their loved ones. The truth came out in a very unusual way. Marlena was pregnant – with Roman's child. At a surprise renewal of her vows with John, Marlena fainted. Roman shouted "watch out, she's pregnant!" Later, the two men came to blows over it and upset Marlena fell down the stairs at the penthouse. Marlena lost the child, then developed amnesia. Roman couldn't bring himself to leave her side, which caused a rift between him and Kate. Eventually, they divorced. When John called in Dr. Alex North to help on Marlena's case, Roman was suspicious of the man from the beginning. As Marlena's husband, however, John got to call all the shots. After Marlena's ordeal with Alex North, she returned to Salem and separated (temporarily) from John. Roman thought this would give him the break he'd been looking for with his ex-wife; unfortunately, he was mistaken. It wasn't long before John and Marlena reconciled completely.
Roman helped to research the crimes of the 'gloved hand' and was disappointed again in Sami when she failed to tell him the truth about being blackmailed. His daughter Carrie's return was spoiled when she and Sami fought again. Carrie ended up marrying Austin and leaving Salem. Roman tried to keep Bo from getting in trouble when he was out for blood with Patrick Lockhart. Roman ended up having to arrest his own brother! The quest to nail EJ got him and the Salem P.D. in trouble.

It's the day of Stefano's "funeral" and everyone gathers at Brady's Pub. Kate meets Anna and the two nearly come to blows, arguing over Roman. Meanwhile, Roman is at the funeral parlor, debating whether to really kill Stefano himself. A bouquet of flowers arrives with a cryptic death threat from Andre; he's on to them.
Andre forces Kate to call Roman and lure him into a trap. Roman arrives at the Pub and finds Kate tied up. Andre knocks Roman out. At the cemetery, Andre's evil laugh rings out. The police search and find a recording. Andre is not there. We see that Roman has been buried alive!

Lucas and EJ show up, unaware, and Andre takes them hostage. Andre throws a grenade into the warehouse, claiming Roman is inside. Bo rushes in. Roman isn't there.
Abe and Steve realized Andre pretended to be the hearse driver. They race to the cemetery and dig up the grave. To their horror, it's not Roman inside but Benjy -- and he's dead.

On the news, he demands Andre bring him Roman, alive, or he'll kill Stefano on live TV. At the pub, Sami and EJ are stunned when Andre arrives with Roman, who is strapped with dynamite and a timer!
EJ tries to convince Andre the vendetta is over and tries to get Stefano on the phone, but he won't pick up. Andre starts the timer. Roman urges Sami to leave but she refuses. Suddenly, Andre's attention is drawn to the Pub's television. Andre goes to the police station with Roman. An eager cop tries to sneak up on Andre, but in the ensuing confusion, Andre takes Hope hostage instead. He escapes with a gun pointed to Hope's head.

As Sami starts down the aisle, Steve, Kate, Roman, Lucas and a mystery woman are all there. We see three guns but don't know who's holding them.
Sami and EJ take their vows, the priest declares them married, and then three shots ring out. EJ is hit in the back. Steve hides a gun at the Pub and Kate brings her gun to Philip.
Stefano suspects Roman shot EJ but Sami argues that her father is no murderer. Meanwhile, Roman recalls that he hid behind the church curtains, aiming to kill EJ when his gun jammed. While fixing it, he heard the shots. Roman finds a bullet hole in Sami's dress and concludes EJ wasn't the only target.
Roman delivers news that the doctors couldn't pull the bullet from EJ's spine. Bo wonders if Roman will use his friendship with Kate to get into her apartment, so he can search it for the gun.
Steve comes into the pub to retrieve his gun when Shawn nearly catches him. Steve leaves, but Shawn is suspicious. Shawn calls Bo to the Pub and shows him the gun. Bo puts it back and Steve returns, falling into Bo's trap.
Roman shows Kate a bagged gun he claims to have found near her apartment. Kate knows it's a set-up but confesses to Roman that she gave her gun to Philip. Roman questions Philip, but he pleads the fifth. Bo brings in Steve with the gun from the pub but Roman reveals the gun was his! Steve was protecting him after finding him at the church with a gun. Steve offered to cover for Roman so he wouldn't lose his job and reputation.
Shawn retrieves a gun and takes it to Bo, who learns that Kate's prints are all over it. Roman arrests Kate. Roman tells Kate that he may be charging her with attempted murder now that they have her gun. Kate asks Roman to steal it from evidence and kisses him. Roman refuses. Kate later eavesdrops as Roman learns from another cop that Marlena's gun matched the other stray bullet in the church. Roman tells the cop to keep quiet and Kate seethes.
